What is happening in Palestine right now?
Israel has turned Gaza into hell on earth. Islamic Relief staff and partners on the ground say the situation is now the worst they have ever seen there.
We have witnessed unimaginable death and destruction that has left the Gaza Strip in ruins, killing 53.655 Palestinians and injuring at least 122,000 including 16,000 children. 437 Aid workers killed, with the exact figures expected to be much higher due to the number of people still missing. Over 1 million are facing emergency levels of hunger.
An astonishing 1.9 million people – 9 out of 10 people – have been displaced, often multiple times, from their homes and so-called safe zones since October 2023.
Although the crisis is most severe in northern Gaza, UN officials warn of critical shortages of medicine, food, shelter, and fuel throughout the region.
Gaza is at risk of famine
The whole of Gaza is at critical risk of famine, with half a million people facing starvation, according to a report by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC).
As well as blocking aid, Israeli military action has destroyed Gaza’s capacity to produce its own food. 95% of Gaza’s cattle have died, and 68% of agricultural land has been destroyed.
Together with the ongoing bombardment and displacement, this created one of the world’s worst hunger crises and pushed the territory towards a man-made famine.
Children and elderly people have starved to death, and more are starving right now.
